About Us

TRASH TALK-IN ACTION is a joint effort born from a transboundary collaboration between Martina, who is a marine biologist and diver, and Kelvin who is an IT skilled guy who spend his spare time Ocean Advocating and entertaining with children of his Kenyan community.

This project is firstly the tale of an unexpected friendship, even well before a capacity-building project.

Through this joint effort we already found a lot of common points: the Ocean is a linking tool for us, not an obstacle.

All the activities are conceived respecting the cultural needs and expectation of the engaged people. Is just the occasion to share knowledge, everyone will learn day by day, none will be left behind.

The rationale behind this initiative is to learn about the ocean, apply in daily life the Ocean Literacy principles (which are only a starting point for us) and learn how to properly interact with the Ocean and its fascinating marine life.

The blue blanket is a marvellous world, please come with us and discover the BLUE!

Our Mission

To contribute to the global mission of Ocean Literacy going beyond the national boundaries. Ocean advocacy in an inclusive way.

Our Rationale

Learning by doing and discovering the marine world through arts and gamification approach.

Trash Talk Vol 1 Music EP

In collaboration with other local artists, Kelvin Oyugi recorded a 5-song music EP called Trash Talk using instrumentals made from waste plastic and a little bit of software to add the bassline.

The EP was done on purpose to convey Ocean Science artistically in a way better understandable by the local community.

The album was scientifically advised by Dr. Martina Gaglioti and Dr. Mariam Swaleh

Credits also to Brazilian environmental Digital Artist Alexandre Valentim for handling the EP's cover design and tracklist design

UNPUBLISHED MEDITERRANEAN AND BLACK SEA RECORDS OF MARINE ALIEN, CRYPTOGENIC, AND NEONATIVE SPECIES

This is the most important publication on alien species performed in collaboration with all the main researchers of the Med sea region working on the alien species topic

HABITAT AND BENTHIC DIVERSITY

This is the first restoration project held in italy where i contributed to the historical reconstruction of benthic diversity of the Gulf of Naples and i performed the habitat mapping work relying on the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station historical literature (from '800 onward)

PHENOLOGY AND ECOLOGY OF THE ALIEN SEAGRASS HALOPHILA STIPULACEA IN ITS NORTHERN RANGE LIMIT IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

This publication referred to the Halophila stipulacea seagrass, which is endemic in Indian Ocean but alien in Med Sea. This is the outcome of a Master thesis project in which Martina was appointed as co-supervisor. This work was performed underwater in the CILENTO BIOSPHERE RESERVE- Palinuro harbour (Italy)

Special Dedication

We officially dedicate this transboundary action and all the efforts we're doing so far to a friend who fights always, more than us.

This initiative is for a great diver and man, who is among the most relevant representatives of the Italian SCUBA diving sector.

With high esteem, and continued gratitude. Trying to continue this journey as you teached us so far. ✨ Against all odds, Keep swimming! 🐠😊

Our Policy

Our decalogue for a concrete impact on the local community:

FAIR PRINCIPLES APPLIED TO THE DATA COLLECTED

We store the data behind every action in our website but also in a database in order to measure the impact driven by our actions on the field. We apply scientific protocols to perform our clean-up and monitoring sessions and we train the locals to positively apply them in their places. Our goal is to make data: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

ETHICAL APPROACH RESPECTING LOCAL TRADITIONS AND CULTURES

In our project we combine scientific background and local art and culture: music, songs and every creative effort will be well appreciated. The rationale behind are the CARE principles: Collective benefits, Authority to control, Responsibilities, Ethics

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF WASTES & A WISE WASTE MANAGEMENT

We are aware the clean-up is not enough. We need to trace the productive cycle as a whole with a Life Cycle Thinking approach from the early life stages to the ending phase of the product life on the market.

4Rs RULE

Good waste management follows the 4 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover, as well as avoiding illegal dumping and littering.

PUBLIC TRAINING EVENTS

Our Action has been conceived since the very beginning through a gamification approach to empower the locals in our activities, we acted both remotely and in presence engaging some local representatives acting as facilitators

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Kids, teens, adults: everyone can make a difference

EMPOWERING FUTURE GENERATIONS

We founded an Ocean Club to empower local children and young people in taking care of their coastal and inland environments.

FOSTERING INTERGENERATIONAL DIALOGUE

We share our knowledge with the locals to empower them with the right tools to be effective in facing the most demanding environmental issues.

TRANSBOUNDARY DIMENSION OF THE ACTION

Great challenges require great commitments for this reason this action is an example of transboundary collaboration between Italy and Kenya conceived by two young minds with complementary backgrounds.

BOTTOM-UP APPROACH

There is no treaty or written rule which can be effectively respected if common people are unaware of that. Since the very beginning we conceived this initiative listening at the main priorities and challenges to be addressed by the local people and we found a successful partnership to make the change possible through concrete actions.

Why we do that?

MARINE POLLUTION is considered a global priority and it has been recognized as the CHALLENGE N.1 in the framework of the UN DECADE OF OCEAN SCIENCES (2021-2030)

It is true there are no rules to counteract the marine pollution and ineffective waste management?

Of course, there are many international treaties and rules behind this topic and even in a transboundary action as TRASH TALK IN ACTION is, we can find some contact points and common rules to be applied both in Europe and Africa.
