Mediterranea is a scientific, cultural and sailing expedition started 10 years ago with the aim to discover the Med Sea basin both from a cultural and scientific perspective. This is not a charter boat but a floating community where everyone once onboard can feel empowered and contribute to the daily development of the project. The project is currently endorsed by the IOC-UNESCO as part of the UN Decade initiatives.
- For 100 nautical miles along Bar-Valona route we accomplished an Advanced Citizen Science Campaign engaging the crew in some outreach and field-based sampling sessions. The objective of this “SCIENCE-FOCUSED WEEK” was to engage common people in the Mediterranea mood, relying on professional expertise of Martina (marine biologist and environmental educator) who was present onboard.
- The activities included the reference to some ongoing initiatives in the framework of the UN Decade of Ocean Science related to Challenge 1 and 2 (Trash talk in action, SeaPaCs, Martina’s previous research contributions, finalized and ongoing restoration initiatives).
- We explored relevant MPAs and National Parks of Montenegro and Albania acquiring some basic skills on marine conservation and environmental protection needs.
The crew acquired basic skills on Mediterranean Sea biodiversity and changed a bit their relationship with the ocean according to the Challenge 9 and 10 of the UN Decade.
